'I have 22 years in computer systems' -- yes and?

Aaah the classic cry of a frustrated seasoned engineer who is struggling to cope with the modern day challenges laid at his door.   The SOS blog picked up on the story of the now infamous My Taylor of Oklahoma who upon seeing the Apache well-done-you've-just-installed-your-server page instantly thought he was being hacked and threatened to call the FBI unless immediate action was taken.  You can read about the whole story in a variety of places, including The Register.

Now you would think that this is an isolated case but sadly it isn't.  I have seen this many times in my so far short 15 year career.  Should I ever have to resort to raming down my yearage to someone then I have given various people the authority to shoot me on the spot.

Even here in the blogging world, our Support desk at Blog-City still gets the classic "i have 20+ years ..." blah mantra shouted at our people.  Well yeah, you may have that many years of experience, but you would think in all that time you could have figured out to email a screenshot?

Should you find yourself uttering that infamous phase, think to yourself the following
  1. What exactly have you been doing with your time?
  2. What are you hoping to achieve when you come out with something like that?  Instant resolution of the problem?
  3. Who are trying to impress with this figure?
  4. Is the Google interface proving too difficult for you to do a little research before making a fool of yourself?
I am all for respecting ones elders, but being rude is still rude no matter what age you are
