Runrig - before and after Donnie

It is only a couple of weeks to go now, before my wife and I drive up to Loch Ness to one of Scotland's oldest and most popular bands, Runrig, in concert. Having secured the tickets way back last December, it has been a long wait, but I am thoroughly looking forward to spending a day at the banks of Scotland's second most famous clump of water, after Loch Lomond that is!

Runrig, back in 1991, did a similar gig, on the banks of Loch Lomond. It was an all day affair, with a wide range of support acts, including the Irish band, HotHouseFlowers. That was one of the best concerts I have ever been to, and even today, when I listen to their music I am reminded of that day. Seen them plenty of times at the Barrowlands in Glasgow, but their indoor gigs never really matched their outdoor spectacles.

However, I am a little concerned about this particular concert.

The YouTube clip I put in there, is of the original lead singer Donnie Munro. Like many bands, he left to persue other interests (namely politics) and Bruce Guthro stepped into his role. Now don't get me wrong, he does an admirable job, (see for yourself below, same song, concert venue, different lead singers), but when I watch this, I don't get the sense I am watching Runrig, but instead just some elaborate karoke event.

One bonus regarding the Loch Ness gig, is that there will be a limited edition whisky, signed by the band, available for purchase. Hurrah!

To Sheenah:

The drummers that you heard would've been performing "A Reiteach"

Not long been a RunRig fan but loving all there stuff, even with Bruce at the front. There's only one Donnie Munro so RunRig will never be the same as it was but just as good. If you haven't already you should check out Donnies solo stuff, I got to meet him in person at the Speyfest concert in 2006! Was well chuffed! xx

I have read all your comments and I am so envious that you get to go to the concerts. I know what an emotional experience these concerts can be. In most cases the studio recording is the best but with a band like this, it must be live. My son and I went to one of the last concerts of Sily Wizard in Ann Arbor, Michigan and it ws an enchanted evening and the best live concert I have ever been to. I am campaigning for Runrig to come to the States but no luck so far. I have read other reviews of the various albums and it seems so many of us sense the cinnematic quality the pieces present. We all imagine a story and pictures to go with the music. I am letting my many ambums play as I surf the net and boy, that Life is Hard is really sad and not to be listened to if you are depresssed. What other music can evoke such emotion.

Went to see Runrig in Plymouth, first time I've seen them live. Absolutely FANTASTIC. Brilliant drum solo during concert wish I knew what the number was called!

Must admit I thought that it was the end of an era when Donnie left the band, and it took me a while to get used to the "new" sound but I'm glad I persevered. I agree with the other comments that with Bruce and now Brian, the new keyboard player, the band seemed to have gained a new lease of life. We went to see them in Nottingham a few weeks ago and I haven't stopped playing their music since! I still love the old songs, but the new ones are great as well. Playing live, I don't think that they can be beaten and I hope they carry on for many years!

Went to the Norwich gig on 12 Oct. Absolutely the best band I have ever seen and to say I have sung Loch Lomond with Runrig is fantastic even if some would say a little sad!

As a late commer to the band I never really heard much of them before Bruce. They were always one of those bands that "one day I must get something by them". No band has stirred me like they do, even the brilliant Big Country. I now have most of their albums and have seen them live in Edinburgh and Plymouth. Best live band I have ever seen, and thats saying something.

Saw Runrig in Plymouth, they were beyond expectations best group i have seen since Bruce Springsteen .Waited 18 years for them to come down here (hope we dont have to wait another 18).Every song was performed with pure profesionalism,i loved the new album,KEEP IT UP LADS

I was at the cambridge corn exchange mon 22.10.07.I have not heard the band since Donnie Monroe,s departure, but i have to say any concerns about Bruce not being able to fill Donnies shoes are ill founded.Bruce sang great and their new songs were out standing. This is a highly professional band who have recreated their sound while still maintaining a highly polished performance. For those who worry about the changes in the band have no fear, change your mind set and move forward as Run Rig have.

Saw them in Ipswich last Saturday. Absolutely brilliant.

Just seen them at Nottingham. Fantastic. Drum Solo in Reitach was phenomenal. Only thing that let it down was the screaming tarts in Row three that were fould mouthed and sexually explicit with therre overloud comments. To my mind they should have been thrown out as they clearly were not there for the music and did the band no favours what so ever. You know who you are take a hint dont ruin it for others.

I live in Michigan and through a local station, Folk Traditions, I first heard of Runrig with their famous Loch Lomand live, about 18 years ago. I coudn't find any way to buy albums since they apparently don't travel to or market in North America. I had to go all the way to Edinburgh to get an album. Thanks to iTunes, I now have about 10 albums.

They are absolutly my favorite band. Granted, it is hard to lose Donnie's angelic voice but Bruce is no slouch. The band has a harder rock sound now, I think, but that is OK. I like Celtic and I like rock. But their ballads touch the soul too. Muscianship is superb and the melodies and poetry of the pieces are matchless. Just wish they would come over here. I have some ideas about advance work and where they should perform.

I use their music for my home videos featuring the Draft Horse Exibition at Michigan State University each October. Perfect match of powerful animals and heart grabbing music.

I was stationed in Greece 17 years ago and traveled to Scotland and Wales on vacation. In Drumnadrochit I heard Runrig playing in the little inn I was staying in. I went up to the woman behind the desk and asked her what music they were playing, from that point on I have been a huge fan. I started out with cassette tapes and when they finally wore out I bought the CD's through Barnes and Noble. I will be moving to Switzerland in a month and will finally have the opportunity to go to a Runrig concert in Germany. I can not wait.

Been a fan since the beginning and have seen them on countless occassions. I truly believe that Bruce brings an energy and passion to the band that Donnie had lost by the mid 80's. Loch Ness was fantastic, given the conditions. Roll on the next outdoor spectacular

I thought this gig was going to be dull, I was proved wrong, Bruce was great, The intro and the video screens added to the atmosphere. The sound was great. Donnie has got great voice but he's got get on his soap box and give us a speech about politicks on his gigs.

An absolutely storming gig. Bruce and the band swept the rain and mud away for the evening and sounded better than I've seen them in years. There's so much more energy in the band now than in the latter stages of the Donnie-era. But the main man in Runrig is the god-like genius known as Malcolm Jones. He's up there with Knopfler and Clapton in being able to make the guitar sing (but can Clapton and Knopfler also play accordion and pipes??).

Full marks to all the band for one of the best gigs of my life.

I was a Runrig fan from the first time I heard them in 1986 but they had become stale by the mid-90s and changing lead singer was the best thing they could have done. Bruce took a couple of years to fit in but he's brought an energy to the band that has made them sound fresher than they have for many years. I was at Drumnadrochit on Saturday too and while it didn't quite match Stornoway in 2005 they put on a tremendous show. Did you enjoy it too?
