Pairing the Stowaway keyboard with a Nokia N800
Yesterday evening I ordered a new Stowaway Bluetooth keyboard to go with my Nokia N800. I ordered this on recommendation from a number on the mailing list that this keyboard worked flawlessly without any problems. Ironically, after receiving it, I noted it was the same one that I had many years ago for my iPAQ, except it had a docking station.
It arrived this morning in record time and once I got through the packaging tried to pair it with the N800. No joy.
After a little Google'ing around I discovered this post that had a number of people with the same problem but thankfully a few helpful souls gave the steps.
Here is what you need to do:
- Goto the Control Panel of your N800 and select the 'Generic' keyboard in the hardware keyboard setting
- Goto the Bluetooth panel of your N800 and search for new devices.
- Assuming it finds the Stowaway keyboard, it will ask you to pair it
- Now, note the passcode number as you are about to type it on the keyboard
- Click OK on the N800, and then on the keyboard, hold down CTRL+FN keys and type in your passcode
- The N800 should now respond saying its paired
Make sure you get the order correct, as that tripped me up a number of times.
It's a great keyboard and works fast with the N800, allowing me to rattle out many an email and also SSH into my servers.

The magic keystrokes ..... Thank you! The manual which came with the Stow Away Keyboard is one of the poorest manuals I've ever come across. Admittedly I rarely read manuals, but when required ... there nice as backup. There was never a mention of the keystrokes required.
Since your blog focuses upon JAVA among other things, ride the web over to my engineering learning wiki ... particularly the software engineering learning page. Here is the url: http;//econtent.wikispaces.com/The problem that I am having is that it pairs, but then when shut down, I have to re-pair it every time.
This helped with my Apple Wireless Keyboard as well. I used the control and option keys, typed in the pass code followed by enter. It paired the first try. Interesting new way to interface with the n800. Have fun.
Thanks so much. Like others, I had to just use the left function key (no control key) and be sure to use Enter at the end. Without your post I'd still be trying over and over to pair these. Thanks.
Also, helps if you continue to hold the fn key when hitting enter at the end.
thanks for the information, It helped me set up the keyboard in no time. One issue I am having, is that all too often a key, any key will repeat at a very high rate (i.e. if I press the i key I might get iiiiii) Is there a way to adjust the repeat rate? Or key bounce?
Thaankkssss (<-- this is unedited, that is what I oftten get while typing)Hi, I followed the instructions above and I also received error message "pairing failed, device resources exceeded". I was able to pair the keyboard by using only Left-FN key, and NOT Ctrl-Fn keys while typing the number on the keyboard. Also, remember to press Enter at the end. Happy pairing!
Thanks for the tips. I've just got a Stowaway ultraslim keyboard too, and have paired it with my n800 (specifying generic keyboard/English (US) in the n800 control panel). Nearly everything works (e.g. all of the green function keys on the top row print correctly), but the £, Euro and Yen signs on the right of the keyboard do not work -- they don't print anything. Has anyone got these to work properly?
I am also having problems pairing my Nokia N800 and Stowaway Universal Keyboard. I tried these steps and get an error message that reads "Pairing failed. Device resources exceeded. Try Again?"
This is the message that I get about half the time. Argh. Thanks for the magic recipe! One addition: after entering the code you must press enter.

I found that even though the pin number is editable, I was only able to pair when I used the pin number provided.
Thanks for the instructions!
