eBay to buy Skype for $4.1B

Published: 10:09 AM GMT, Monday, 12 September 2005

Congratulations to the SKYPE team, who I am sure are all jumping for joy at this precise moment as the news of their new owners are about to be released. eBay will be buying SKPYE and integrating it into the mother ship for a princely sum of $4.1 billion (with $1.3 billion in cold cash). Putting this in context, the PayPal buyout cost only $1.5 billion.

Although not everyone seems to be happy. Quoting from the Reuters piece,

"Given that eBay has no related presence in the online personal communications market (no instant messaging, chat or email services), we do not see immediate synergies from such a move," said Mark Main, senior analyst at consultants Ovum.
