When driving back to New York from Washington last month, I was surfing through the car radio channels and happened upon one that was playing Christmas tunes for the whole weekend. That in itself was unusual enough for me to just stay for a while and listen.
However, as I my eyes glanced around the dashboard every so often I noticed the display on the radio was showing the name and artist of the currently played song. Never registered with me. Then watching it for a while, it was indeed using the RDS to display the song track and artist. I had never seen this and wondered why more radio stations didn't adopt this. Definitely a good reason for me to stay with a particular radio station.
Anyone else seen this?

I saw this in a rental car more than a year ago when driving around in NY. It gave the name of the artist, the song, and also some statistics about the song. I forget which channel it was. I belive I had to hit the "Info" button on the car stereo for the info to show up.
Thats cool, but i have still to find a station here in the UK that broadcasts the current song/title being played via RDS. The BBC doesn't do it, i have surfed around the independents that i can tune into, and they don't do it either. Am not disputing it doesn't happen, just haven't seen a station here that does it! :)
"The Voice" in Copenhagen does it too Alan. And NRJ stations in various countries. Dave's spot-on I'm afraid ;-)

But Dave i live in the UK and do not know of any radio station that does this. The BBC merely gives out the 'Radio 1' type of message. What radio station can i tune into to see this?
Alan
RDS has been used this way in the UK and Europe for about the last 10 years, if not more. Should you happen to be driving over here (UK) we can also ofer you, competitions, news headlines, traffic updates etc... If I know you are comming this way I will even add a special hello welcoming you to the world of clever stuff.
If you were feeling even more modern and bought yourself a Digital Radio (DAB) we send you web pages, album covers, programme guides, click throughs to uncut guest interviews.... all very handy, especialy if your driving.
